Thumb sprain

Skier’s thumb is a common condition in which a very important ligament in the thumb becomes stretched or ruptured and the thumb becomes weak and unstable.

What causes thumb sprains?

Most often, this is caused by a fall or sometimes can be secondary to repetitive stresses resulting in stretching. This is then known as Gamekeeper’s thumb.

What are the symptoms?

Pain, swelling, tenderness and bruising are common. The thumb becomes unstable and weak.

How to diagnose it?

The stability of the joint needs to be assessed. X-rays of the thumb will rule out a fracture.

Functional treatment

If the thumb is stable, splinting and therapy will treat this condition.

Surgery

If the tendon has been completely torn, surgery is the best treatment: method of treatment for Gamekeeper’s thumb. The ligament will be repaired to the bone. Therapy will be required to maximize range of motion recovery.
