What causes a mucous cyst of the finger?

The most common cause is arthritis of the distal joint of the finger. It is secondary to wear and tear associated with aging or with trauma.

What are the symptoms?

  • Occasional pain and stiffness
  • Ulceration, drainage and infection may occur

How to diagnose it?

Clinical exam is typical but X-rays will be obtained to assess the joint.

Surgery

Surgery can be performed when the cyst is painful and can be carried out under local anesthesia. The joint will be debrided simultaneously to decrease the risk of recurrence. Recurrence however is always possible.
