De Quervain’s
Stenosing Tenosynovitis

Usually, this condition results from repetitive overuse of the thumb and wrist.

Tenderness, swelling and pain in the wrist on the base of the thumb.

Clinical examination easily identifies this condition. There is pain over the first extensor tendon compartment and symptoms are made worse when these tendons are stretched (Finkelstein test).

Rest, NSAIDS and splinting can be enough to calm the inflammation.

When conservative treatment fails, a simple release of the compartment can be done under local anesthesia to relieve the pressure.
